The Transplant House Need
University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison is a world-class transplant facility. Approximately 450 solid organ and 100-110 bone marrow transplants are performed there each year. Over 75 percent of these patients do not live in the Madison area. Located just six miles from the hospital, Restoring Hope Transplant House will provide high quality, comfortable and affordable housing to these patients and their caregivers.
Transplant requires many trips to Madison for appointments and surgery. Immediately following transplant, patients are required to stay close to the hospital. Depending on the type of transplant, patients are required to stay in the Madison area anywhere from one week to over three months following transplant. Patients also must travel to the hospital frequently for testing, monitoring, rehabilitation and support before and after the transplant. The financial and emotional costs of these trips can add up for families who are already facing high medical costs and stress.
RHTH will provide peace of mind for patients and families who are worried about where to stay while in Madison for testing and surgery. This home based environment will meet the needs of guests in ways that a hotel facility lacks. RHTH will be the only hospitality house in Madison to serve transplant patients. RHTH currently turns away 15 people per day, on average, who are in search of housing during their transplant-related visits to UW Hospital.
Upon completion, RHTH will be open 365 days a year to serve the transplant patients and caregivers who come from near and far in search of life-saving care at UW Hospital. In a time that can be emotionally and financially challenging for families, RHTH will provide an affordable alternative to area hotels by charging just $30/room per night. A designated fund will support those who are unable to pay.
